Are Outdated Systems Putting Your Family at Risk for Fires?
You know that certain foods and hygiene products expire. However, did you know that fire protection systems can become outdated too? That’s right, your old smoke detector and sprinkler systems could be less trustworthy than you thought.
The Dangers of Outdated Systems
If your sprinklers and detectors are expired, you, your home, your belongings, and your loved ones could be at risk. Outdated systems may not function properly. This malfunction can mean that the detectors do not go off as soon as they should or do not alert you at all when a fire is present.
In the case of a fire, even a few moments can be the difference between a safe exit and devastating consequences. Up-to-date sprinklers and detectors can give you a few precious minutes if your home catches fire.
How to Tell If Your Systems are Expired
Some estimates have found the up to 30 percent of residential fires to which the fire department responds have either no smoke alarm or unknowingly have detectors that do not work. You don’t want to be part of that group.
Most fire alarms can work appropriately for up to ten years. If your home’s smoke detectors are at least ten years old, you should have a professional electrician install new devices immediately. However, just because a device can last up to 10 years doesn’t mean that it always will. That’s why regular checks are essential.
How Often Should You Test?
Even if you have a newer system, it’s crucial to conduct regular checks. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association tells homeowners that they should check their fire protection systems once per month.
Each detector has a unique way of testing it. Be sure to consult the directions for your unit before conducting your tests. If your device does not respond correctly, you should immediately call an adequately trained electrician to install a new system.
